Abstract
This work is divided into two major parts. In the first part of this study the author describes the main elements of traditional Iban ADAT (customary law) as they apply to individuals in their relationship to others, to marriage and family life, economic undertakings, major life crises, and important ritual and ceremonial occasions (p. ix). The second part of this document deals with the more restricted practices of augury or the interpretation of various types of omens, especially in regard to birds and other animals. This section presents long lists of omens and their interpretation by the Ibans. In addition to the two main themes of this work other aspects of Iban ethnology are discussed -- death and mourning, life cycle events (e.g., birth, socialization processes, puberty, etc.), weaving, traditional pastimes, and dance and music.
