Abstract
Social changes among the Iban are particularly notable in tribal structure and religion. In order to preserve what is left of the knowledge of traditional medicine, Pilz presents here a detailed study of shamanism (MANANGISM) as she observed it during her field work among the Iban in 1974. The author discusses the general role and function of the MANANG (shaman or healer), basing much of her data on the information provided by Manang Jabing Anak Incham who also was an informant for Benedict Sandin. The data presented here pertain to the initiation ceremonies of the MANANG, curing ceremonies and rituals, and various chants used in these performances. The text is illustrated with many excellent photographs showing the various curing ceremonies and shamanistic initiation rites.
