Abstract
This study deals with two major topics: (1) an enquiry into the gradual development of a specific type of colonialism under Brooke administration and its effects on the people colonized, and (2) the institution of head-hunting, which gradually changed with time and eventually ceased to be of more than an isolated and sporadic occurrence as the result of colonial government policies (p. 1). In this work Wagner discusses the history of the Brooke administration in Sarawak with particular emphasis on the punitive expeditions carried out by the government and its allies against various recalcitrant Iban groups to force them into compliance with colonial rule. Other topics discussed are basic economy, land tenure, farming techniques, settlements and social organization, leadership, and rituals and omens.
