Abstract
This document examines the cultural logic of Iban shamanism. As background Graham presents a brief ethnographic survey. The survey is followed by an evaluation of literature on the Iban and Graham's use of some of this material. Additional data in this study pertain to: the ritual language chants which form part of shamanistic healing rites; the performance of the shaman (MANANG) in a variety of ceremonials; shaman initiation ceremonies; an enquiry into the significance of the 'transvestism' of the transformed shaman (MANANG BALI); and a final chapter on the social and cultural context of Iban shamanism in the society.
