Abstract
This book describes the lifeways of a nomadic, boat-dwelling fishing community. The central thesis links the distinct culture and adaptive strategies of these "sea people" not just to the specific resources of the coastal ecosystem and surrounding sea, but also to their interactions, both historical and contemporary, with settled farmers or neighboring “land people.” Major themes covered include demography, seasonal economic activities of boat-dwelling Sama-Bajau households, labor and technical organization required in fishing, markets and exchange practices, communal rituals, marriage rules, and kin groups.
