Abstract
This article is about Chaura (Chowra) Island, often identified as unique for the fear other Nicobarese have of the island and its people. It argues that while the inhabitants of Chowra are good stewards of their own island and its resources, they are exploitive of the resources of neighboring islands to which they have free access thanks to their feared reputation as magicians and sorcerers. The Chowra islanders are famous for their pottery and boats, for which other islanders trade surplus food.
