Abstract
In a tribal society, such as the Bhil, the traditional response to an innovation like the introduction of the panchayati raj may be that of traditionalization of the alien object itself or modernization of the power structure or both with some kind of linkage to the macro-political process in India. How this process takes place in the tribal village council of Alsigarh Gram Panchayat, representing the villages of Alsigarh, Pai, and Aad, is the major focus of this paper. As a prelude to the discussion above the author describes the political structure of the traditional Bhil village.
