Marriage in Tamil culture: the problem of conflicting 'models'

Abstract
This paper focuses on the complexity of defining the coded substance of a husband and wife and thus determines the actions that are conducive to marital harmony. This ostensibly simple task was shown to be complicated by the fact that villagers came up with not one but at lease three 'models' which were intended to define the exact nature of the coded substance in question. Further, it was shown that these models, when seen in the abstract, appeared to contradict each other. The ethic of lila on the one hand and the Kali Uuga rationale on the other, however, were found to neutralize the mutual exclusivity of these models and render unterstandable their co-occurrence and co-operation (pp. 87-88).
