Abstract
This article is a resurvey of some South Indian villages conducted by the Department of Economics, University of Madras in 1936-1937, comparing economic developments over a twenty year period from the initial survey in 1916-17 by Dr. Gilbert Slater, the first university professor of Indian economics. The village studies contain abundant data on demography, land use, land tenure, tenancy, agriculture, animal husbandry, and village industry and trade. There is also some limited information on the socio-political organization of the villages.
