Abstract
This is a study on how the internal structure of the several castes, particularly those displaying right/left bifurcation, relate to or function within the various spatial components or 'nesting tiers' of social organization that exist in the Konku region of Tamilnadu (Madras State). Each chapter of the document is organized around one of these components -- the region (NaTu), the administrative territory (naTu), the revenue village (kiramam), the hamlet (ur), and the household (kuTumpan), and these in turn are contrasted with others of the same magnitude. Beck then attempts to show how each of these units then '… can be subsumed under some single, over-arching unit on a higher plane' (p. 1). The document is particularly useful to the researcher for its ethnography, appendices and detailed identification of each informant used by the author. An extensive glossary and bibliography contribute additional value to this work.
