Abstract
This is a study of social stratification in the Tanjore District, with emphasis on the class structure, based on the ownership, control and use of land. Interspersed throughout the discussion are frequent references to caste, whose omnipresence is to be noted in all discussions of social stratification in South India. For purposes of comparison, the author divides the district '… into the Old Delta and the New Delta, each one with its characteristic patterns of agrarian relations corresponding on the one hand to differences in ecological conditions and on the other to differences in the structure of the caste'. In addition to the above, this source also contains much information on land tenancy and ownership, labor supply and labor relations, and conflicts within the agrarian structure.
