This document examines economic conditions in six villages using the work the work of previous observers as well as the author's own field investigations to produce a diachronic picture. The author discusses the social aspects of control over means of production, alternative documents of income, physical conditions affecting agricultural productivity, and standard of living for each site; then she relates these various factors to rates of change and development.
