Abstract
This article describes the different kinds of buidlings made by the Garo, including homes (NOKMONG), bachelor houses (NOKPANTE), field houses, and granaries. The houses are essentially 'huge baskets made of bamboo and set on posts,' flexible enough to withstand earthquakes and airy enough to allow smoke from the fireplace to escape. The homes include rooms for livestock, a public living, cooking and eating room, and a private sleeping room.
