Abstract
Mukherjee witnessed a healing ceremony in the Garo village of Singbandagir at Adugiri in December 1953. Diseases are caused by spirits (MITE) and can be expected to be healed by a ceremony in which incantations and animal sacrifices are of main importance. A priest (KAMAL) learns about the kind of disease-causing spirit through divination before the healing ceremony can be started. Christians as well as non-Christians participate in and contribute to the ceremony.
