Abstract
This article indicates the place of fatalism in the lives of Thai villagers. Ingersoll reviews native terms for fatalism, discusses beliefs about karma, describes forms of divination by which peasants try to learn of their fate, analyzes some beliefs and practices which are tied to responses to predictions of fate, and discusses what he calls 'differences in their ideal and real orientations toward fatalism'. He closes with a cultural ecological interpretation of Thai village fatalism.
