Abstract
This paper stresses the importance in Malay life of rice growing with all its prescribed rules and ceremonial. The role of the 'pawang' [shaman] at each stage of rice growing is discussed. The various tools and their uses are described. The rice growers' cooperation on a community level in planting, irrigating and harvesting is described. The appendix includes in Malay a list of technical terms used in rice planting and detailed descriptions of the methods used.
