Abstract
This is one of a series of three papers on Malay Literature (for folklore, see 9: Winstedt, for proverbs on Malay character and letter-writing, see 10: Wilkinson). The series in which these are included was published by direction of the Government of the Federated Malay States to serve as an introduction to the study of Malaya, especially for foreign civil servants. This paper describes in detail the development of Malay romance, history and poetry and the basis of their popular appeal.
