Abstract
This study attempts to reconstruct a history of cultural development and cultural influences in Malaya from the earliest prehistoric times. In eight chapters covering origins, beliefs and religion, social, political, legal and economic systems, literature, and arts and crafts, Winstedt defines what in Malay culture is traceable to early Indonesian influence and then points out later additions and changes due to Hindu and Mohammedan influences and to more recent European contact. Winstedt, long a resident of Malaya, had intimate knowledge of Malay culture and as shown by the extensive bibliography, had reviewed the literature thoroughly. This book is a revised and enlarged edition of the author's A HISTORY OF MALAYS.
