Abstract
This is a study of Vietnamese institutions before French intervention in Indochina presents materials on administrative organization and law. It discusses civil and military mandarinates, taxation and public works, the structure of the commune, family custom and ancestor worship, and includes a commentary on Annamese poetic literature. Pasquier had a long career in the French colonial administration of Indochina and favored a policy of indirect rule when he became Governor-General in 1928. The author's use of diacritical marks in the native terms has been followed, though his usage is not consistent.
