Abstract
This book based on the authors' personal experiences as Chinese representatives in Tibet, deals with Lamaism, Lama government, the life of the people, and the calendric festivals. These sections are preceded by a brief historical survey of Tibet's past. Detailed descriptions of life and the courses of study in the lamaseries, of the governmental structure, and of the author's impressions of Tibetan life are included. The authors confine their observations to the Ge-Lu-Pa (Yellow) Sect and to Lhasa, with only incidental references to the other sects and to other parts of Tibet. As the book is aimed at the general public, transliteration of Tibetan names and terms do not follow the standard system. The text of the Sino-Tibetan Agreement of 1951 is included in the appendix.
