Abstract
This account of demographic and economic changes in the Xinjiang in the decade and a half following the Chinese Communist Revolution is based on newspaper and government reports. The region was a focus of economic development because of its rich mineral deposits. China's cooling relationship with the Soviet Union had political consequences leading to factional disputes within Xinjiang. The author discusses increased immigration into the region and the propaganda employed to attract and mobilize Han Chinese. Also discussed are the construction of new towns, population resettlement, land reclamation, and the development of agriculture, mines and industry.
