Abstract
Based on a wide acquaintance with secondary sources, this book is largely an expanded translation of Chinese material on Xinjiang; excerpts from one appearing in the appendix. The focus is on the period of the Republic of China, from the end of dynastic rule into World War II. The author spent two years in China during the war but did not travel in Xinjiang itself. An extended introduction precedes the main text.
