Abstract
This book provides an overview of the political history of the peoples of Xinjiang from two contrasting vantages. One is Xinjiang as the "front door" to China’s landward side. The other is Xinjiang as the focal point for international tensions in the Inner Asian region. Although there are frequent excursions into historical precedent, the main focus is on the first half of the twentieth century. The analysis of political history is supplemented with information on the peoples of Xinjiang, geography and economic development, and by several appendices dealing with the arts (including archaeological remains), critical events in external relations, and natural resources.
