By: Sneath, David.

Abstract
In this study, Sneath examines the impact of Chinese government policies on Inner Mongolian pastoral society. He looks at the pre-Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary collectivization and decollectivization periods, including the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution. He discusses the political struggles between Beijing and Hohhoot over the implementation of policies, and those between political factions within the region. Sneath's thesis is that pastoral economy engenders hierarchical social relations in Mongolian society, which have persevered throughout the socialist period.
