In this article, the author discusses the origin and possible meanings of the name Manchu (see also document no. 38), the different Manchu dialects, Manchu writing and literature, and Western scholarship that used Manchu sources. The author identifies a small minority group in Western China, the Sibe, whose language is closest to the Manchu dialect spoken in northeastern China before the Qing Dynasty.
