Family structure and independence training in a Taiwanese village

By: Olsen, Nancy Johnston.

Abstract
Olsen examines the relation between the extent of child independence training and the presence of grandparents in 37 Taiwanese households. olsen found that mothers who live in nuclear families are more likely to emphasize self-reliance in the training of their children than are mothers who live in extended families. Among the possible explanations for this, Olsen suggests, is that grandparents keep alive conservative practices and attitudes in extended families and that the degree of self-reliance training may be related to the conflictive relationship between mother-in law and daughter-in-law.
