Temple organization in a Chinese village

Abstract
This dissertation explores the connection between religious ideology and political activity by focussing on the development of a 'spirit writing cult' in a central Taiwanese village called Pearl Mountain. Seaman argues that the cult provides the motivation for villagers to undertake certain sorts of activities which its ideology defines as meritorious but which also have definite political functions. The time period covered is from the end of the Japanese occupation in 1945 until the conclusion of the author's field research in 1973.
