Abstract
Using data from the city of Lukang (a Ch'uan-cho city), DeGlopper examines the theory that it is possible to construct a model of Chinese urban social structure. DeGlopper discusses the theoretical issues involved, the city of Lukang, Lukang in space and time, Lukang's economy and population, and social structure in nineteenth-century Lukang. The author concludes that '…there is no distinctive form of urban social structure in Chinese society. Rather, there is a characteristically Chinese social structure which consists of overlapping formal associations and a distinct sort of network of interpersonal relations' (p. 263).
