By: Harrell, Stevan.

Abstract
Harrell is concerned in this essay with explaining major differences in social organization evident in three rural communities southwest of Taipei. Harrell suggests that the relevance or absence of lineage organization in each village is a function of the different adaptive responses of peasants to varying environmental conditions. The relationship of social and spatial organization in each community to ritual activities is also discussed.
