Abstract
This essay discusses the role and functions of political brokers in an area where villagers depend for their livlihoods upon contractual arrangements with the government-owned Taiwan Sugar Company. Commissioners who act as the Company's agents in daily dealings with the peasants find that this role enables them to gain political influence as well, thereby displacing traditional village or lineage leaders in authority.
