Abstract
This essay is concerned with historical changes in the town of Shu-lin which engendered changes in how membership in religious organizations is defined. The kinds of religious communities that are discussed draw their members on the basis either of residence (i.e., territory) or kinship affiliation, ethnic identity, or devotion to a paricular god.
