Abstract
This dissertation is an historical ethnography of Ta-ch'i, a Chang-chou Hokkien-speaking town. Sangren has used the concept of the marketing community as a focus of his study rather than the community, per se. Information is presented on the Ch'ing period, the Japanese colonial era, the Republican administration, the marketing system, territorial cults, pilgrimages, Buddhism, sectarian cults, and social organization.
