Kinship and descent in an Okinawan village

Abstract
This is an excellent study of Okinawan kinship and social organization. Some of Tanaka's findings include the presence of three structurally distinct kinship terminological systems. There is a taboo against the 'mixing of brothers,' i.e., adult male siblings of the same father are forbidden to live under the same roof; nor can a younger son replace an older son. Inheritance and succession strictly follows from father to first-born son, etc. Tanaka also discusses in detail the MUNCHU descent group and household organization.
