Abstract
Kerr has written a comprehensive history of Okinawa that focuses mostly on foreign relations. He relates in detail Perry's visit to Okinawa in which he ultimately forces himself into the royal palace. It is a trial run for his open door policy in Japan. Kerr is also good on Okinawa's long period of dual submission to Japan and China and Okinawan efforts to keep it a secret. Kerr relates in detail the missionary Bettelheim's long-suffering stay on the island, which overlapped with Perry's visit.
