Abstract
This study is based on interviews with four guest artist teachers who came to the University of Hawaii to teach Okinawan music and dance. Combs discusses one form of folk dance, called EISA, which is performed only during the All-Souls Festival (UBANG). It involves four groups of dancers and drummers who travel from house to house performing in people's yards. The next day the dance is performed in the village square. The dance involves precise movements and timing. The object of the dance is to please the ancestors and demonstrate village unity. Some of the EISA dances include a comic figure and incorporate modern embellishments.
