Abstract
This source is the work of a professional anthropologist and is informed by field research. It first explores the status of the outcaste population in Japanese society generally, and then examines a rural outcaste community in Okayama. The focus of the latter, the main body of the paper, is a discussion of the interplay between individual and group identity, and avenues of upward mobility available to members of this stigmatized minority. The conflicts inherent in any mobility strategy are emphasized.
