Outcaste relations in a Japanese village

American anthropologist63 • Published In 1961 • Pages: 282-296

Abstract
This source is concerned with the relations between outcastes and 'ordinary' elements in the village of Yokoi. Data were gathered through interviews and questionnaire. The author concludes that 'discriminatory attitudes, 'self-fulfilling' biases, and intergroup tensions are made to flow within and to support the local system of minority-majority relations by mechanisms within the outcaste buraku or those which directly join it to communities outside' (pp.293-294).
