Abstract
This source contains a survey of Japanese political power and organization from prehistory to the late Tokugawa era. The focus of the book shifts back and forth from political events and organization at the national level to those at the local level. The author has chosen to discuss Bizen Province (an area that is presently part of Okayama Prefecture) '...as a case study through which we can observe at close range the functioning of political institutions common to most of the rest of Japan' (p. 15). Topical coverage is largely limited to political authority, governmental organization, military organization, land tenure, and the ruling classes. As may be expected in a work that encompasses such a broad sweep of history, the depth with which topics are covered is limited. The researcher will find that some previous knowledge of Japanese history is necessary to understanding this work.
