Book

The household in the status system of Japanese villages

University of Michigan PressAnn Arbor, Mich. • Published In 1951 • Pages: 62-73

By: Beardsley, Richard K. (Richard King).

Abstract
This source is a brief discussion on Japanese social structure and values. Field data from Niiike in Okayama Prefecture and Tsutsu on Tsushima Island are presented and compared in order to illustrate the author's contention that '...Japanese villagers emphasize the household over the individual, the consanguine over the conjugal family, and ascribed status over achieved status' (p. 70). The second half of the article is of a more speculative nature and includes a critique of Ruth Benedict's interpretation of Japanese values as well as a discussion of the importance of gimu and giri (obligation, duty) in the Japanese value system.
