Abstract
This article, written by a professional anthropologist, compares the patterns of consistent interaction among households in four communities. He argues that while the specific functions of these relationships have changed over time, the relationships themselves remain significant in defining and maintaining the community as such. Both economic and non-economic relations are considered. One of the four communities is more remote from urban contact than the other three; one of the three situated close to Okayama City is an outcaste community.
