Abstract
This source is a community study of Matsunagi hamlet, a mountain community in Okayama Prefecture. The source covers most topics of general ethnographic interest with an emphasis on social relationships in the community. The author concludes, first, that the household is the primary unit of community social structure and, secondly, that 'the importance of residence in forming kin relations suggests that residence may be a far more vital characteristic than anyone, even the Japanese themselves, have imagined' (p. 231).
