Account of a secret trip to the interior of Korea

Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan9 • Published In 1883 • Pages: 141-147

By: Kenny, W. J..

Abstract
Abiru Yusaku, the editor of the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan, discovered in his trunk the manuscript written by a certain Tsushima man concerning a trip he had taken in disguise to Tai-ku. The manuscript is translated by W.J. Kenny. In itself, it is not too revealing as far as data on Korean culture is concerned. But the use of disguise (apparently the French missionaries donned Korean mourning garb in order to effect peaceful entry into Korea) in order to make a tour of observation in a particular country is quite suggestive. The traveler's tour took about three weeks and his observations are limited to the type the average tourist might make. The emphasis is upon diet, personal hygiene, travel accomodations, and styles of life of the different social strata in Korea.
