Abstract
This study was prepared in response to a United Nations' request for general background information on specific subjects. It deals with the effects of Japanese domination of Korea, the status of Korean economic and agricultural resources, and the Korean needs which must be satisfied if political and economic rehabilitation are to be achieved. It is based primarily upon unclassified War Department, Military Government and other agency reports and papers, official Japanese and Korean government reports, and extensive use of the works of Grajdanzev (source number 6 in this file), and M. Frederick Nelson, 'Korea and the Old Orders in Eastern Asia.' A brief historical summary of events leading up to the two rubrics -- during and after Japanese domination. It provides an excellent summation of the effects of Japanese imperialism in such areas as education, industry, and foreign trade and considerable incidental material on political repression. Statistical documentation is provided in the paper and in eight appendices which follow. Appendix 2 which reproduces General MacArthur's proclamation of occupation, and appendix 7 which contains tables on Korean trade and chief exports have not been excerpted for the files.
