Abstract
This work consists of a series of lectures that were delivered by the author during his second furlough from missionary activity at Princeton Theological Seminary as the Missionary Lectures of 1921. After having been partly re-written and delivered on four other occasions in 1929, they were finally published in 1932 so that a wider public might be reached. According to the author, these studies represent twenty-eight years of following a hobby while pursuing an active missionary life. 'The writer has read practically everything that has ever been written upon the religions of Korea, with the exception of those treasures locked up in Chinese books, and, in the text herewith, he has called attention to things said by other writers. By far the greatest part of his materials, however, are from his own notebooks, and the references are mainly for corroboration, rather than given as original sources. Either before or after seeing those books, the items quoted have all been verified.' The greatest attention is given to Buddhism, and then, ranked in terms of the amount of space devoted to them, the author considers shamanism, Christianity, Confucianism, the Chuntokyo cult and miscellaneous cults. This is probably the most complete and extensive work on religion in Korean culture in English and should be consulted by all those whose research interest in Korea includes religion. Three appendices in the book contain translations of TONG CHUN TAI CHUN (the Bible of Chuntokyo), OKJU KYNUG (the Bible of Shamanism), and YUMCHOO KYUNG (the Buddhist Rosary Classic) and will be found in category 539
