Abstract
Using upper class Korean family patterns as a background, Kang sketches in detail the development of a marginal person destined to become alienated from both the East and the West. An excellent life-history, this narrative presents the consequences of the acculturative process upon the individual. The only role for which Kang is fitted is that of pak-sa (literally, scholar of everything) and this role is no longer existant in Korea because of lack of cultural support. The narrative concentrates on family relationships, Kang's schooling in Korea and Japan, his participation in the Korean revolution and his determination to leave for America
