Abstract
This work is based on the author's fieldwork among the Wolof in Senegal from April 1971 to June 1972, and from December 1972 to March 1973. The study presented here attempts to determine the pattern of cooperation and cohesion in several Wolof communities and to analyze their significance for planned rural development. Some of the major topics discussed in this monograph deal with the theoretical and hypothetical relations between islamization, cultivation of cash crops and abolition of slavery on one hand, and stratification, cooperation and cohesion on the other; the political history of the Wolof states; changing political conditions after the fall of traditional rulership; agricultural development policies; technical and economic aspects of the Wolof system of farming; socio-cultural changes in the system of stratification in Wolof communities; and patterns of cooperation and cohesion in descent groups, age groups, local groups, status groups, and in affinal relations (p.1).
