Abstract
This is a description of the life and economy of a fishing village on the isle of Saint-Louis at the mouth of the Senegal River. It is divided into three sections: environment, the people, and work. The main body of the work is devoted to the fishing industry of the village. Detailed descriptions are given of the fishing techniques, boats and equipment, and of the main types of fish caught. Description of the culture, aside from that intimately connected with fishing, is very limited. At the time of publication, Leca was a Brevete of the Ecole Coloniale and of the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, while Labouret was a teacher at the Ecole Coloniale.
