Abstract
Smith presents the political history of Daura Emirate, Nigeria beginning with the Muslim jihad of 1804. The 1804 jihad was primarily a Fulani jihad, and the Fulani took over the control of the formerly Hausa government of Daura after their successful campaign. Smith provides an in-depth description and analysis of the history of the Hausa government in exile, their return to power (ca. 1904), focusing on their political organization and internal and external relations through 1966. Their external relations are confined primarily to the Fulani, the 'state' of Zinder of which several Hausa states were considered vassels, and the colonial British representatives.
