The social functions and meaning of Hausa praise-singing

Abstract
This article describes and analyzes the Hausa institution of praise-singing, conducted by specialists known as maroka. Smith first presents background in the form of historical and cultural summary, then describes examples of praise-singing in several situations. The activities are clearly described to indicate the pervading influence on many elements of the culture. Smith analyzes the functions in terms of the methodology of A. Radcliffe-Brown, to determine the common meaning expressed in the various occurrences.
