Abstract
This monograph concerning the Hausa of Zaria Province in Nigeria, is a pioneering study of the Hausa. The monograph is cast within the framework of British social anthropology, which is to say a strictly functionalist approach. Hence, the various sectors of the culture, including the social structure or local communities, the system of rank and authority and the outline of the modern economy, are carefully and painstakingly shown to exist in a balanced relationship to one another. In addition to this overall interrelatedness, Smith deals exhaustively with the organization of household and community groupings, the kinship system, the basis of political activity and political ranking, and with an analysis of individual and community budgets and the change in economic activity under the so-called indirect rule policy of the British administration. An extensive series of appendices summarizes a wide array of data on these various activities.
